Masala-Spiced Popcorn Balls from Vegan Crunk

Halloween is the perfect time to talk about one of our favorite comfort foods — sweets! Store shelves are lined with candy, and while much of that candy is accidentally vegan (Skittles, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, etc.), it’s so much more fun to make your own spooky sweets to hand out to the neighborhood kids (or, if you’re like me, all your friends who refuse to grow up). Not to mention that when you make sweets at home, you know exactly what is going into the final product. No artificial colors, no preservatives, and absolutely nothing that came from an animal.

Vegan candied apples, homemade chocolates, and wrapped vegan caramels are perfect for pirates and princesses. And homemade popcorn balls are just the right size for stashing in every little ghost and goblin’s plastic pumpkin baskets.

I’m including my recipe for popcorn balls here, using Earth Balance® Vegan Buttery Flavor Popcorn. But I’ve put a little spicy spin on the traditional ball. These are delicately spiced with Indian flavors, and the Earth Balance® Organic Coconut Spread adds a light coconutty taste that will remind you of a dessert version of a hearty Indian curry.

If you’d prefer a traditional popcorn ball, simply omit the garam masala and curry powder, and stir in one teaspoon of vanilla extract when you add your Earth Balance® Organic Coconut Spread.
